Here are some frequently asked questions about Arkansloyd handicraft classes!

What is “sloyd”?

Sloyd (or slöjd) is the Swedish word for handicraft.
Educational sloyd is focused on the formation of the student, not only the creation of a project.
This is part of what drew us to teach sloyd instead of just “woodworking”.
Students develop independence and self-reliance, train in order and neatness, and learn perseverance and patience.
Does my student need to buy their own tools or will tools be provided?

We provide tools for use during the class, but students are also welcome to purchase their own tools to learn with and practice under parent or teacher supervision.
We will have tools ready and sharpened for students to use in class.
Students should contact us before bringing their own tools to class to keep everyone safe and using the correct tools!
How do I choose the correct class?

All classes are combined skill level so students can self-pace their work and help each other throughout the classes. We do a brief time of warmups and safety together at the beginning of each class, and then begin work on sloyd exercises and projects.
Individual Students
Individual students can sign up for a semester class or an 8-week session (a semester is two, eight-week sessions.)
After signing up for classes, we will send you a welcome email with all the class info and forms, and you can choose your class time to join from the schedule!
Schools/Homeschool Groups
If you are signing up for a class that’s been set up by your school or co-op, simply select the name of your group on the Join a Class page. (If you are interested in setting up classes for your school or co-op, please click here to contact us).
How much are classes and can I use EFA funds?

Classes are $600 a semester (weekly, one-hour classes) and $300 for an eight-week class (half a semester).
Yes, we are approved to accept EFA funds!
